Gusti Leather – Aiming To Be Ethically Responsible and Ecologically Sustainable

Gusti Leather – Milton Leather Shoulder Messenger Bag

Gusti Leather recently sent Planet First Clothing one of their messenger bags for our CEO Matt Pyke to try out.  He was so impressed with the bag and the ethical business philosophy of the company, we decided to post a blog about Gusti Leather and their products.

Gusti Leather is a small business based in northern Germany, which produces a large range of high quality leather business bags, satchels, handbags, luggage bags, purses and wallets.

The company aims to be ethically responsible and ecological sustainable.  All of the leather used in their products is sourced from animals that are bred for meat production. The leather hides that are sourced from Islamic and Jewish countries such as India, Morocco or Pakistan only come from animals that are slaughtered using methods preferred by those particular religions.

Gusti Leather have two main brands:

(i) “Gusti Leder nature” – These products have a “vintage” look and are hand-made from goatskin and cowhide from India, Morocco and Pakistan. The leather is traditionally tanned using vegetable based solutions.  The products are coloured and sealed using plant oils.  Chrome chemicals are not used in the process.  The small family-run businesses that produce these products are required to follow strict regulations on working conditions for employees.

(ii) “Gusti Leder studio” – These products are primarily produced from buffalo leather and cowhides from India and Italy, and Chrome tanning is used to make more sturdy leather products.  Although Chrome tanning is not usually regarded as environmentally friendly, Gusti Leder studio only uses companies which comply with international production standards, such as SA 8000.  Regular laboratory tests ensure that guidelines regarding the use of Chrome VI are complied with.

Gusti Leather representatives regularly visit suppliers to check all production is carried out in fair and humane conditions.  The company also ensures that suppliers can comfortably survive on their pay, and that child labour isn’t being used.

The bag Matt now uses is a “Milton” Leather Shoulder Messenger Bag which has a unique vintage look.  Made from cowhide leather, it has 5 pockets (including two zipper pockets) and adjustable shoulder strap.  You can find out more details about the bag here. Matt said, “I am very impressed with the high quality of the  messenger bag, which is ideal for carrying my laptop and documents.  I would certainly recommend Gusti Leather products to anyone looking for a high quality handmade leather bag.”
