Eco-Friendly Activists Turn to Guerrilla Gardening

Planet First Clothing has discovered that neglected and orphaned land in our cities is being targeted for a make-over by eco-friendly guerrilla gardeners.  The term ‘guerrilla gardening’ is used loosely to describe different forms of radical gardening.  Sometimes this is gardening with political aims perhaps highlighting a land use issue, or just introducing plants intended to improve the appearance of a place.

We caught up with some guerrilla gardeners in a large city in the North West of England, they were clearing a small neglected piece of land and planting it with flowers.  We asked them why they do it:

‘We are fed up of seeing this area covered in rubbish and weeds every time we walk into the city.  We just want to reclaim this area for everyone to enjoy’

This group was clearly motivated by the desire to improve their local environment.

A more radical aspect of guerrilla gardening is seed bombing. This entails using seed grenades to introduce plants and flowers into those difficult to reach neglected sites, such as the verges or the central reservations of busy roads.  Seed bombs are typically made from compressed bundles of soil containing seeds (seed balls). Guerrilla gardeners often launch their seed bombs (or seed granades) from moving cars or at the traffic lights.

Check out www.guerrillagardening.org for more information on guerrilla gardening and how to make your own seed bombs.
